Boren began teaching at the NBA level in 1994. He was Free Throw Shooting Coach for the Golden State Warriors from 1994 to 1995, the New York Knicks in 1996, and from 1997 to the present for the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks. From 2003 to 2006 he worked for both the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Clippers.
The teaching system has proven to be extraordinary. The Mavericks have ranked either first or second of the 30 NBA teams in free throw shooting percentage in 9 of the last 13 regular seasons. In a 2003 road playoff game at San Antonio, the Mavericks made a record 49 consecutive free throws, a record that might remain unchallenged forever, as it is rare when any team even attempts that many in a game. The Clippers made the playoffs in 2006 with Boren, finishing second at 81.6%. Through 2012, the Mavericks made the playoffs 12 consecutive years, and averaged 81% at the line, by far the leader in free throw shooting.
Adhering to NCAA and NBA guidelines, Coach Boren only coaches other coaches. Requests for personal instruction for players are referred to Coach Val Rhodes, who can be reached in Dallas at havecoachedwilltravel@yahoo.com or 214-477-1153. Coach Rhodes covers all aspects of the game. Coach Boren has referred many players to Coach Rhodes over the years, and all have expressed total satisfaction with the value of his instruction.
